Probably a KORG Electribe MXStage6 would do you just fine. My friend has one. It's a boner in a box.

I use Cubase and Fruity Loops. Anything along those lines will work. You can get some free VST synths online, to start.
Controllers are nice to have, too. Drumpads, electronic drumsets, keyboards, guitar-synth. Not 100% needed, but makes thing more fun, and can be really useful.
If you want to do audio recording, you'll need a condenser mic for stuff like acoustic guitars, vocals, etc.
A dynamic mic, like an SM57, is good for close micing drums/other loud stuff.
