Auckland, City of Cars: Episode 3

Uploaded by: mikeofnz
Video Description:
This is the 3rd episode in a five part documentary confronting common myths about transport in Auckland.
The myth that sustainable transport is "uneconomic" is debunked.
The economic cost of Auckland's car dependence is revealed; the flaws in Government analyses of transport projects are analysed; and the lengths to which the roading lobby will go, in order to manipulate decision makers, is exposed.
Features interviews with international experts professors Peter Newman and Jan Gehl, Todd Litman, Dr. Paul Mees and New Zealanders Cam Pitches and Roland Sapsford.

"Uneconomic"? How come that i.e. Hamburg public transport has 357 million passengers/year using 9 (subway-/rapid transit-) lines with 215 km total length and 148 stations? Plus 192 million passengers/year using 654 buses on 113 lines with 881 km total length and 1.295 bus stops.

we would build more public transport in britain if there weren't so many listed protected buildings that are unable to build more rail because there is no room but we keep building those terrible wretched trams! but we have very good buses

Thanks for these great videos Mike. I am a Geography teacher - and these are going to significanly help my students understand the issues with Auckland's growth and the solutions to our growth. I have included them on my GeographybyLizz wiki to help them understand.

So there are thinking people in Auc. after all! I am forced to live in Auc. for three more yrs. and then I am off. Cant wait! I miss trams, trains, and bikes. Most of all I miss not getting pissed on every time I take a walk. One problem with vid. is that it treats Auc. as if it were a city and compares it to other, real cities. Auc. is suburbia so compare it to suburbia. I bet it compares well to townships in the US.

i hate suburbia it doesn't have the anemities of the city and doesn't have the anemities of the countryside so suburbia has the worst of bost KEEP SUBURBIA CRYING AND THE CITY COMING!

"I am forced to live in Auc. for three more yrs. and then I am off. Cant wait!" seljo55, Good riddance, and by the way, you're "forced to live" in NZ? Oh really? Nobody is forced to live in NZ, don't like it then leave, that simple! Bitching won't do anything, just makes you look like a proper asshole.

I live in Vancouver & have lived in Sydney, Copenhagen & Amsterdam. Ive been to most modern cities for work. Im currently coming to the end of my contract in Van & looking at where 2 go next; the main reason I dont want to go back to Akl is public transport. Akl need fast rail on corridors & light rail in downtown areas. Increasing oil prices, drunk drivers, $40 taxis to go out, crazy! Preserve our environment, impress tourists, bring ex-pats home, Have a beer & ride train home; C'mon Auckland!
In NZ the transport ... ( 5 months ago by plenty2see)
In NZ the transport infrastructure is not catering for our needs, we have a history in NZ of having very intelligent and innovative engineers, but unfortunately they are thwarted by our fucked up build everything cheap motto, and then the long drawn out process of regulations and rules that go through different committees and then 25 to 30 years later we start to build it, then its done cheaply like the Harbour bridge. it will be 30 years before Auckland has under water tunnel to city.

In 1990, Auckland was 10 years behind Perth in terms of public transport iniative. Now, we are 25 years behind.
I like the fact ... ( 5 months ago by yamahaU3)
I like the fact that they are supporting public transport, but i fundamentally disagree with their ideology: by their logic, why dont humans just go back to stone age? No pollution, no harm to animals, or better still: human stop existing.
Auckland is a great ... ( 4 months ago by prettypatty21)
Auckland is a great city, its biggest problem was the townplanners inability to foresee how fast and big Auckland would grow, they are actually completing the motorway system that was first mapped out in 1955, it was never finished, they are also looking at other options like building better railway, but unfortunately things go real slow over here, by the time this plan is finished it will be too small to handle the population of the day! we need to ditch building motorways and roads already!

Got what u r saying ... ( 1 month ago by NameFrUtube)
Got what u r saying bro. Though this place would b a shithole even if they built trains and the weather improved. It's the people man. People in Auc are the sadest combo of white trailer trash, welfare darkies, and asian petty businessman. The women are extremely ugly with short fat legs and wide hips, men are sad and desperate...how u r gonna fix dat?
