asterisk shines for small business that uses the phone in any way. You can do voicemail that reaches you by email, call filtering by caller id, unlimited speed dialing.

In 1876, a young girl named Jenn was walking down a river, an insane man killed her by stabbing her in the back, raping her, and then hanging her in his closet. While he hanged her he said Bukakke Bukkake.
Now that you have read this message, she will find you and her dead body will haunt your house for 5 years. Every night you go to sleep she will appear in your closet, hanging their with her glowing red eyes.

"What's a gooey?"
It is the phonetic way to say GUI. GUI stands for graphical user interface.

MohDemos: I knew that.. just trying to be clever! :-)
I like this use of youtube very much - do it more! But there were alot of insider terms like GUI (pronounced gooey) that will make no sense to non-techies.
I'm looking forward to having an application for asterisk - have been watching it and am very excited about the possibilities.
Cheers,
Tobias

Shoot... if someone is installing a Linux based PBX, they are not likely to be a "non-techie".
Let me put it like ... ( 1 year ago by YahQuan)
Let me put it like this...
For households with at least three adults and 2.2 kids contending for the phone, "*" is a dream come true. If configured properly, "*" will handle simultaneous calls and process incoming(CID) and outgoing(block ld or require call code) calls. This means that Jen's phone buddies goes to Jen's phone/ext and not ring the hold house. To add to that, if Jen is to be in bed at 8pm, her buddies can opt to leave a message of ring up the parents parents to talk.

Because it is network(TCP/IP) based, it can go wireless. The remote functionality is endless. I can travel to Japan (or anywhere I can access the internet) crank up my laptop and VOIP app, login to my "*" server in the US and make phone calls without ld fees. Its like v*nage on steroids but you having total control.
"*" is the shilnitz! I know this because I do this.

You should check this video also, it is much cooler (sorry Mark). I advise you to download and install the system presented in the other video (4PSA VoipNow), it makes AsteriskNOW to look like a seven years kid toy.

I like the idea of making and receiving calls while away from home. Not to sound like an idiot, but what is the easiest (or should I say the least expensive) way to set this up for home use? I assume I need to buy special hardware since I don't currently have VoIP (I'm using a standard landline).

Get an old PC. Install hardware that will give you an FXS port for plugging a phone into. Download and install AsteriskNOW onto that PC. Done.
As for the hardware ... ( 1 year ago by mspiceland)
As for the hardware, the easiest thing to do is to install a PCI card from digium because it will work out of the box and be supported natively by Asterisk now. The Digium TDM10B Single FXS is about $150 retail. For about $50-90 you can get an network based Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) that will have an FXS port. Digium makes one called the IAXy. You can then configure it and configure AsteriskNOW to get it to work.

I have tryed out AsteriskNow and have found it to be very buggy. Better off learning how to compile asterisk in a linux term will be a more stable system. AsteriskNow im my opinion is no good for a production business phone system unless you can afford downtime.

If you're still having problems with this, check the md5 hash to ensure the download was not corrupted. I had to download twice to get it to work. Good luck.

i have installed sipfoundry they have one of fastest growing community that could become the first choice for many of us, sipfoundry supports pure sip with voice-mail IVR, and user portal and minimum features for such small office and it claims to handle over 500 concurrent active sip session.
anyway asterisk without sip proxy can only have 50 concurrent session
