I don't know if Peter's views on commodities are risky. Oil may be risky because you would have to weigh its increasing scarcity against promises of alternative energy. The last 16 presidents promised to get us off foreign oil, so we'll see what happens.
I think gold is the safest investment now, assuming we don't have another gold rush. I don't anticipate this current deflation lasting too long. The Fed needs another bubble, but can't make one without credit markets.

I had a couple of clients in the recycling industry, so I'm always nervous about commodities price fluctuations.
I think oil will resume its price increases in 3-5 years and never look back. Solar panels and wind farms are nice, but we need nuclear power to really make a difference. Those types of construction projects take 10 years and we still don't have the will to start them. I think alternative energy will be the next attempt at creating a bubble.
