it's catch-as-catch-can wrestling without submissions. the terms freestyle and folkstyle didn't even exist then. and they are derivates of catch-as-catch-can.

Drew is correct on all accounts. The term freestyle didn't become en vogue until the 1930s. Amateur catch-as-catch-can wrestling was the term used in international competition and the Olympics.

I'll rephrase this. Catch wrestling with out the holds (catches) is not catch!
This film is from the New York Athletic Club. The NYAC has always been one of the leaders in the Olympic Movement. Therefore, since submissions have never been allowed in Olympic Wrestling it is not Catch as Catch can.
Folkstyle is the same as folk music. It is just the style of your culture. Judo, Karate, Greco Roman, Cumberland are all folkstyle.

No. This is amateur catch-as-catch-can wrestling. The term catch-as-catch-can predated the term freestyle. Subs were part of the PROFESSIONAL catch-as-catch-can style, though not the amateur. In 1908, catch was introduced to the modern Olympiad and was contested under five weight categories. I'm looking at the rulebook for the 1908 Olympiad catch tournament right now. It might not be what your vision of catch is, but that's what they called it back then.

I have hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of primary source documents pertaining to amateur catch-as-catch-can wrestlng prior to the 1930s, collected over a ten year period of research, and have written and published extensively on the subject. Not sure what else to say here...

you don't really know what your talking about, hooking (or "hook wrestling" which more historically accurate) is only one aspect of catch-as-catch-can. please do a decent amount of historical research before commenting further. amateur wrestling was derivative of professional catch-as-catch-can with most of the submissions removed (though the double wristlock and some other holds were allowed to an extent for quite a while).

Nothing. I have material up to the 1960s, but aside from AT show wrestling, I have little interest in professional catch-as-catch-can wrestling beyond c.1930. My amateur materials are likewise very spotty beyond that time. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Perhaps the answer to your question is in some of my comments below?? I don't recall having called amateur wrestling professional. Perhaps you were confused by my previous statments regarding my materials. To re-phrase:
My primary sources for amateur wrestling are spotty beyond the 1930s. I have nothing on the Wilkes.
With respect to professional wrestling (were you wanting info), I have little interest in it beyond the 1930s and likewise have limited primary material on it.
