I was watching the making of ben hur,and charlton heston said the red car was a myth and him wearing a watch was also a myth.Also nobody got killed either.

Where was the race supposed to have been held? In the film, I think it is supposed to be in Judea (Palestine), but there was no such massive arena there.
Maybe it was actually held at the Circus Maximus in Rome?
What an EPIC SCENE from one of the GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME. They simply do not make movies like they used to.

That is a myth. It has been since disproved.
Two other myths which have been disproved are that a stunman was killed and that Charleton Heston was wearing a wristwatch.

TRIVIA:
Charlton Heston was taught to drive a chariot by the stunt crew, who offered to teach the entire cast. Heston was the only one who took them up on the offer. At the beginning of the chariot race, Heston shook the reins and nothing happened; the horses remained motionless. Finally someone way up on top of the set yelled, "Giddy-up!" The horses then roared into action, and Heston was flung backward off of the chariot.

Trivia:
The large "island" in the stadium was great for filming, since a backdrop of a stone wall is cheaper to film than a backdrop of thousands of extras. However, such an "island" in a real stadium prevents spectators from viewing the race properly at all angles and would not normally exist.
When the production was over, MGM was afraid that small-time local Italian producers would use the leftover sets as backgrounds to their own low-budget epics, so they destroyed all of the sets.

Trivia:
Burt Lancaster, a self-described atheist, claimed he turned down the role of Judah Ben-Hur because he "didn't like the violent morals in the story" and because he did not want to promote Christianity.
Paul Newman was offered the role of Judah Ben-Hur but turned it down because he said he didn't have the legs to wear a tunic.
Stephen Boyd wore dark contact lenses for the film. He actually had blue eyes.
MGM acquired over 40 scripts for the film.

Ah, thanks. I've been to Israel, but not to Caesarea. But I am sure though that the ring there couldn't have been as big as this one. This looks like the Circus Maximus in Rome.
But this is still a tremendous scene, tremendous movie!

Lancaster was a self-described atheist, in "Moses the Lawgiver" (1974), the $5-million TV epic produced by Britain's ATV-ITC and Italy's RAI Television. When a reporter asked him if he was following in Heston's sandal-clad steps, Lancaster replied, "If Charlton was trapped in Biblical films, it was his own fault - he accepted the limitation." Though Lancaster claimed he was an atheist, some of his friends doubted him.

I think Lancaster and Heston are fine actors. Heston played in only three Biblical roles, Moses in 10 Commandments; Ben Hur; John the Baptist in Greatest Story Ever Told.
