Private or not, the Federal Reserve answers to nobody. Congress has no control over it, neither does the president.
The minutes of their meetings are kept confidential, and what is released is whatever the Fed deems appropriate.
The members of the Federal Reserve are not chosen by the American people, but by the major national banks. This is like having Al Capone, Dutch Schultz, and Bugsy Siegel choose the members of an anti-crime organization. It's pathetic.
